Last Sunday April 16, at 6:30 P.M., the Wesleyan Service Guild of the Woman Society of Christian Service sponsored a "Reception" for the forty-five new members who have joined v the church since last June 13, 1966. The Guild and its Presi dent, Mrs. Mary Howell had the support of the Pastor, Rev erend James C. Peters and all the other auxiliaries that make up the entire fellowship. This was a high moment in the history of St. Matthews Church. The program consisted of two-minute speeches by all chairmen of the various organi zations. Mr. C. E. Dean, Church Lay Leader, was the presiding officer of the occasion, Mrs. J. | R. Smith was the Program' Chairman. After ,the program, the recep tion line for the new members was formed in the educational section of the Church. At least seven members of the class were hired by Humble or other firms at the end of the first earn -and -learn period. The oil com pany started its program when It had several vacancies for steno graphers In Houston, Its headquarters, but couldn't find enough young women who qualified for the Jobs. Bethel News A Japanese Tea The Mary Corbett Missionary Circle of Bethel Church will sponsor their annual Japanese Tea, Sunday, April 23, in the Fellowship Hall at the church beginning at 1.00 p.m. and end ing at 5:30 p.m. Donation 25c. All are invited to attend. Area Missionary Meeting Theme: The Toiler Becames The Thinker ? Goal ? To help people use their talents to help them selves. The Nellie T. Herbin Area Missionary meeting was held in the Fellowship Hall at Bethel Church, Friday, April 7, at 3:00 p.m. The devotion was led by Mrs. Aleece Faulkner by singing *My Hope Is Built." Prayer was offered by Mrs. Cora Alston. The scripture, First Corinthians, verses 3-8, was read by Mrs. Sarah Jackson. A poem, in keep ing with the theme, "A House i B The Side of The Road, was read by Mrs. Naomi Wynn. I Hymn, 'Lift Him Up" ended the devotion. Mrs. Ethyel Anderson, Area . Chairman, presented the Pro gram Leader, Mrs. Irene Booker who discussed "Jobs for Youth," A concern of the Churches Today and Tomorrow. A question and answer period followed. Mrs. Frances Enzlow discussed Poverty and Juvenile Delinquency and some of the things the church can do to solve many of the problems presented. Remarks were made by the Presiding Elder of the Greens bor District of the A.M.E. Church, Dr. G. S. Gant, and ministers in the area who were present ? Rev. Wilson. Rev. M. L. Johnson, Rev. J. R. Cheek, Rev. Beatty. and Rev. L. S. Penn. Sr. The session closed with the Missionary Benediction. A large number of members were In attendance. Fellowship Service On Sunday April 9, two char tered bus loads and several car loads of Bethelites journey ed to Raleigh, N. C. where they rendered a service at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, at 4:00 p.m. The group was welcomed by Mrs. Hattie M. Edmondson in behalf of St. Paul, Mrs. Naomi Wynn of Bethel responded. A tasty and generous repast was served by members of the church in the church dining room. Following the dinner all gath ered in the sanctuary with the Senior and Gospel Choirs, Ush ers, several officers and other members of Bethel for the serv ice. The choirs were at their best, as was Dr. Leon S. Penn, Sr. pastor of Bethel, In deliver ing the message. The fellowship was very rewarding. Bethel Is very appreciative of the hos pitality show them while there. Rev. B. F.
